I do a different kind of science – I don’t work in a lab or teach at university. As a mental health blogger, my science is about SEO (how to make sure that my website appears on Google search results), and I also do web coding and web design, which involve HTMLs. That’s my kind of science.

The psychology bit comes in with what I put into my mental health blog.

Now, are these hard work? Nope. I love what I do and I feel a sense of accomplishment every single day.

I think science is challenging and not always simple or straightforward. You can spend a lot of time planning a study, collecting data, analysing the data, only to find something hasn’t worked – but this is all a part of science and a negative or ‘null’ finding is still important (may suggest that there isn’t an effect at all). I think science can be hard work, but it is very rewarding. It’s a cliche but I think that the stuff that’s worth having is the stuff you need to work for, makes you appreciate things more!

Everything can become hard work when you do it often enough. When I begin to find something really tedious or boring, I’ll find something else within the project to do for a bit. Normally when I’m coming to the end of ‘the distraction work’, I’ll be getting fed up with that, so will want to go back to the original thing!

I wouldn’t describe my job as being science specifically, but perhaps the research I carried out in my psychology degrees would be classed as science. Thinking about the research, I would say it can be hard but it’s worth it if it’s something that you are interested in and want to contribute to a wider understanding with your findings.

Sometimes! I find writing research papers difficult, particularly when I have a million other things to do as well

Definitely. It’s a busy and challenging job, but it’s also very rewarding and so much fun.
