To know that I can improve other people’s lives is my biggest motivator in my job. People spend a big part of their day at work and often see their work colleagues more often than they do their own family and friends. Therefore I feel that people should be happy, healthy and safe at work and I try to make sure of this for the people I am supporting as best I can.
I love blogging. I have been doing this for 15 years. I think being a mental health blogger is an exciting career option. It’s like being a YouTube vlogger.
Also I like to publish all things psychology, mental health and well-being.
As long as I feel like the work I’m doing can help people and improve their lives somehow- it’s all good! Moreover, it’s really important to have a good work/life balance and to not feel so over-stressed and burdened with work that your personal life suffers.
I think helping to understand why some people experience mental health difficulties, how they manage these difficulties, and how we can help to reduce distress experienced by others is a big motivation. For me, I think we really lack a clear understanding of the complex mechanisms which lead to poor mental health outcomes and also why some people don’t experience these poor outcomes despite having some difficult personal circumstances (i.e. what buffers against these risk factors or improves wellbeing). I think psychological approaches to mental health offers a way of understanding the complex nature of mental health and wellbeing (which other approaches may not be able to do alone)
