I love to do something with social science because I am not good with maths and physical science like chemistry and physics. I planned to do either sociology or psychology. It was my high school teacher who encouraged me to do psychology. I love it.
I was always fascinated with mental health conditions and physical illnesses, and wanted to understand why some people have poorer mental health compared to others. I thought that I wanted to train in medicine and go into psychiatry, but realised that I was more interested in understanding what causes mental health-related issues (e.g. our relationships, childhood, social interactions) rather than focusing on treatments or on our biology.
I loved studying Psychology at A-Level and realised that Psychology can be applied to virtually anything.
I also hated Chemistry at A-level which had a hand in things!
I have always found it fascinating how we are all the same species yet we vary so much from person to person and how we are affected by our upbringing and environment. I wanted to do a job where I am helping people in some way, so studying psychology made sense to me because the knowledge I have gained from it allows me to help others as best I can!
I really like ‘people’…sounds weird, I know! I like chatting to people, and really like trying to understand people and why we do certain things. That’s when I got interested in some of the stranger side of psychology (google Phineas Gage and read about his story- that’s cool!)
Now, I really like using psychology in everyday life to try and help people and make their lives a little better.
